A powerful winter storm is expected to impact the Southern US this weekend. The farther north the system tracks, the less likely our local area will see winter impacts. If we receive winter weather, the most likely precipitation type is a freezing rain/sleet mix. Bitter cold temperatures are expected after the system passes. There is a LOT of uncertainty surrounding this system, so there are a lot of details that we just do not know yet like the exact track of the system, extent of the area impacted, exact locations, amount of ice, and level of impact to travel and infrastructure. It is important to keep up-to-date with the latest local forecasts and ensure you are not looking at a forecast from a few days ago. Share important weather information with family, friends, and neighbors. Be prepared that you may need to adjust weekend travel plans if the forecast worsens. Protect People, Pets, Pipes, and Plants from Cold Weather! People - Minimize time outdoors. Prepare for power outages. Check on elderly and other vulnerable people to make sure they are okay. Pets - Keep your pets warm, dry, and indoors as much as possible. Ensure their food and water does not freeze. Limit outside time and keep them bundled up. Pipes - Insulate pipes if possible. Open up sink cabinets to expose pipes to heated air. Disconnect hoses and turn off water to sprinklers. Plants - Know their temperature thresholds. If possible, cover them before the cold weather sets in to help retain some heat. For more information, visit our social media pages at Facebook and X pages or listen to a NOAA Weather Radio.
